The best army for ranking you can make in Arabia:
1. Grey rank:
- buy as many App. Halberdiers you can
- don't promote them until 3rd Lieutenant
- if some Halberdier gets injured, dismis him and buy a new one
2. 3rd Lieutenant - Lt. Colonel (7600 - 7800 XP)
- you are now 3rd Lieutenant and you can buy App. Halberdiers until your income is -320
- promote the App. Halberdiers you have from the grey ranks
- train and promote the Halberdiers only after you promote to next rank
3. Lt. Colonel (7600 - 7800 XP)
- when you have 7800 xp, dismiss all your soldiers (no mercy)
- buy 20 app shamans and app bedouins until you reach the wage limit
- train light (you may lose some battles but you win the xp for soldiers)
4. Colonel
- when you promote to colonel first thing you have to do is to buy more app bedouins
- promote the app soldiers
- train light
- when you promote, be careful to promte them all at the same rank (all standard, adv, vet, etc...)
- your wage limit will be allways at maximum value
You will recive 2 free troops (at Colonel and Brig). don't dismiss them.
At Grand Marshal you can promote them to Hero (almost all of them... depends of the wage limit and soldiers number you have)
You can be a GM in less than a week ;)

this is important! do this all grey rank long! if you do, you will be 3rd lt. in an hour, if you don't, it'll take you several hours.
the buy cap at 3rd lt is -310, not -320. the negative buy cap means that you can buy a lot of soldiers when you become 3rd lt (like 7 halbs or so...).

problem: being a GM is boring as hell
if ranking is your thing though, another way is to keep going with Halbs until Maj Gen or even Staff Gen and then do a complete rebuild with beds (or whatever units you choose).

agree@grensgeval, i did that too (at maj gen). being GM isn't that boring, as you are probably the one that will lead strikes...

if you want to rebuild at Maj General or Staff General you need a lot of gold... you have to buy at least Advanced soldiers (at Staff general) or standard (at Maj gen).
anyway, border training will be a pain like this and at GM you don;t have wage and xp to promote all to hero ...

don't really agree to that, gibi. at end brig you can have 400k gold, if you saved some at lt col, col and brig. you can buy standards then, even some app's. you can have an army that, if you promote it, will have your wage maxed out (-1460). that not all are hero doesn't matter. elite's are good too (little better hp/str to wage ratio), and if one elt gets killed, you can promote more elts to hero.

agreed, just buy apps: more units=more power
training may be only one or two border-hits in the beginning, but that's okay.
and your healers will improve like crazy!
